Introduction
The
sacred hymns in the form of Gurbaani, uttered by the Ten Gurus
have come to us preserved through the ages. They teach us a way of
life giving us the key to a successful life redefining the meaning
of success in life. They have the capacity to bring a
transformation that can uplift our souls and take them to
unconquered spiritual heights . A wealth lies hidden in the Divine
word,’Shabad’,which we regard as our Guru as ordained by the tenth
Guru , Guru Gobind Singh Ji . The “Guru Granth Sahib “ contains
the instructions from the ten Gurus as well as other divine souls
, saints and elevated beings .Unfortunately, the younger
generation that is unaware of the Gurmukhi script, the original
language in which the Gurbani has been recorded , finds this pool
of knowledge inaccessible . For them and all others who are better
versed in English, a humble effort has been made to bring them
this masterpiece from our Gurus in the form of a transliteration
in English. Every effort has been made to make the pronunciations
very simple and crystal clear and avoid every possible mistake.
Despite that a humble request is made to pardon us for any unknown
errors that might have crept in and we would be indebted to those
kind knowledgeable souls who bring them to our notice.
About Nitnem : Nitnem contains prayers for the morning ,
evening and night . Jap Ji Sahib (composed by Guru Nanak Dev Ji),
Jaap Sahib, Tav Prasaad Savaeeyae and Chaupaee (composed by Guru
Gobind Singh Ji) and Anand Sahib (composed by Guru Amardas ) are
the morning prayers ,while Raihraas Sahib containing Guru Nanak’s
sloks and shabads (verses and hymns) from Guru Granth Sahib
alongwith a Chaupaee , a Savaiyaa and a Dohra (composed by Guru
Gobind Singh Ji ) , first five stanzas and the last stanza from
Anand Sahib , followed by Ardaas , the general prayer . Kirtan
Sohila ,as aforementioned , is recited before going to sleep.
Japuji Sahib: The foundation of Japuji, rather of all teachings
embodied in the Guru Granth Sahib is Mool Mantra , followed by a
slok and thirty eight stanzas again followed by a slok . Guru
Nanak begins by proclaiming that there is one God , who is all
Truth , most Potent , Fearless , without Enmity , Deathless ,
without Birth , Self Illumined , ever true before existence ,
since existence , now and for times to come. To attain Eternal
Bliss and union one must abide by His Command (stanza one) . His
Will governs and controls the entire creation (stanza two). People
keep on describing His Will but they can only make a futile
attempt (stanza three) .Pilgrimages , charity , penances , rituals
, taking baths are useless, whereas worshipping with extreme Love
for God , meditating will enable realizing Him but only with His
grace ( stanzas four to seven ) . Hearing God’s Name, His Hymns
and Songs of His praise enables one to leave evil habits, realize
secrets of the worlds, immunize from sins and attain Divinity
(stanzas eight to eleven) . Abiding by God’s Will with affection
enables attachment with Him; such person becomes indescribable,
his mental darkness removed, obstructions to Godly path broken and
He also enables his relations to the true path to enlightenment
(stanzas twelve to fifteen ) . The Godly status of devotees
enables them to get big honours and know God’s secrets; however
ignorance of some leads them to think that a bull supports the
earth (stanza sixteen) .There are innumerable ways to worship Him.
Some engage in meditation, some read scripts and others follow
virtuous methods (stanza seventeen).
On
the other hand are countless evil doers, murderers, cruel and
sinful (stanza eighteen).
There are countless living beings and innumerable worlds.
Languages provide media to utter His praises and describe limits
of His Creation, but it is foolish to even make an effort to
detail His Creation (stanza nineteen) . The dirt of our sins can
be wiped by meditating and ultimately merging in supreme soul
(stanza twenty ) Even true worship does not enable us to describe
or decipher when the world was formed (stanza twenty one) . His
creation are endless and all courts and measures would fail
(stanza twenty two) . Meditation or worship however is not
fruitless; man gains highest status and praise through His worship
(stanza twenty three) . He and His Creation are limitless; only He
Himself knows his size and limits . A true worshipper only
realises that his bigness has no ends (stanza twenty four )
Mortals forget the graces of the Giver ; pains and griefs suffered
are also His Boons . He knows to whom and what to give. Real gift
of God is His worship (stanza twenty five).his limitless and
countless glories and gifts con not be accounted by even learned
souls; it would be foolish to make any effort to count them
(stanza twenty six) . Who can know where God sits and manages the
creation? Abiding and obeying are the best ways to merge with His
soul (stanza twenty seven ) .One must restrain from wearing rings
and carrying other such acts ; instead one should love God and His
name to get contentment of mind , earn honest livelihood and avoid
making sins (stanza twenty eight) .He pervades all , He is Lord of
All and everyone is destined to live as per His will . Achievement
of powers to perform miracles is not our aim (stanza twenty nine)
. Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva do not control the Universe with
different objectives, one who can not be seen regulates the world
(stanza thirty ) . God has seat and storehouse in all worlds and
He has put worldly objects for all enough for only once (stanza
thirty one). One may possess lacs of tongues and recite His Name
repeatedly but only His kindness can enable salvation (stanza
thirty two) . Man is powerless , whether to speak or keep quiet ,
whether to beg or give to live or die , to acquire riches which
perturb the mind , to understand Him or to meditate is all His
will and grace to do all acts (stanza thirty three ) . While God
created seasons, nights , days , wind , water , fire , and humans
with different habits and names , He also has His court where
actions of humans are adjudged , where saints are honoured and
good or evil are rewarded and punished respectively (stanza thirty
four) . Mention of Region of Spirituality (Dharamkhand) directs
one to achieve true objectives of life as in Divine courts virtues
and evil deeds will be considered and social status , whether high
or low becomes meaningless (stanza thirty five).Mention of region
of Divine Knowledge (Gian Khand ) inspires thinking to serve
others , get pleasure from Celestial music ,Mention of Region of
Spiritual Beauty and Wisdom (Saram Khand ) gives understanding of
True Guru embodied in Gurbani through the medium of language .
Here intellect is moulded and soul purified (stanza thirty six) .
Fourth Region ( Karam Khand ) of Divine Grace is for devotees
graced by God possessing spiritual power and divine light , and
who can not be defrauded . Final stage is Sach Khand where the
devotee is fully absorbed in Him (stanza thirty seven) . There is
mention of Union with Him through various stages, example given of
making of God by a goldsmith seeking His glance (stanza thirty
eight) . At last Guru Nanak mentions that Air is the Guru , Water
the father , and Earth the great mother , day and night the male
and female nurses in whose lap the world resides .God judges good
and evil ; those approved called by Him others pushed away . Some,
because of their virtuous actions are blessed who in turn enable
others to make efforts in similar direction to achieve salvation (Slok) .
